Rhode Island’s Board of Regents will be asked next week to approve a first-ever state funding formula for schools. Commissioner Gist has released the details of the proposal that is meant to bring fairness to the distribution of education funds to RI communities. The proposal, a PowerPoint explanation, and a series of FAQs is available online.

The big losers here are the state schools. The creators of the formula acknowledge that the Met and Davies are 100% state funded, but seem to think that they can function without any additional funds.

The “state share” number is still murky, so I will be very interested to find out the data that calculates that number for all districts.
The differences are amazing — a huge shift in dollars from the southern parts of the state (and Newport County) to the northern!

The one thing that is clear from the break down is that the RIDE is cutting over 700,000 dollars per year from Davies; it’s a little less for the Met. I really can’t see how they will continue to operate under this plan.
