Assigned Reading is the blog of an elementary public school teacher. I have been teaching for 17 years in a suburban Rhode Island school district. Although fairly conservative politically, not all such views translate to my profession as an educator. I believe student-centered curricula are a necessity for all schools, and our one-way-fits-all approach is the reason our public schools are failing so many kids. Overly aggressive unions, political bureaucrats, and ivory tower administrators share much of the blame, and continue to hinder the reform truly needed in public schools. Charter school success often reveals what is needed to reform public schools.
I write to offer my thoughts about education reform, my opinions about the state of our public schools, and what I believe our kids need. I also hope to share interesting bits of education news, both in our state and across our country.
Opinions expressed are strictly my own, and should not be construed as opinions of the school department in which I am employed or any other of its employees.
I hope you’ll visit often, and perhaps join in.
